Q: Is Brenda Kay Beck a native author/film producer?
While Brenda Kay Beck is not native, in 1991 she married a Navajo medicine man and became immersed in the traditional ceremonies and culture of the Navajo people. She raised their daughter in the tepee and wrote her first book about her daughter’s kinaaldá, the Navajo coming-of-age ceremony.
In May 1994 the Native American Church of Navajoland, Inc. recognized her as a naha lahi, (medicine person). She has carried herself respectfully in that way in NAC and Navajo Beauty Way ceremonies ever since.
Brenda still attends traditional Navajo ceremonies, and the teachings of the Navajo Beauty Way form her spiritual practice. Her upcoming memoir, Changing Woman Speaks: From Lost to Found in the Navajo Beauty Way, was foretold and sanctioned by her medicine man mentor as her exchange for the teachings. It has been written with much love and respect for her Navajo and maternal relatives.
