Struggling to Stay Balanced in Times of Radical Change?

Change is inevitable. But not always easy.

We can be battered by change, jostled and scattered like loose feathers in the wind. Or we can be the eagle flying high above the storm navigating our way safely and in control as we ride the energies of the air.

The Navajo diety, Changing Woman, teaches us that all of forms of life in this Earth plane are constantly changing as they move forward through time and space. The earth turns on its axis causing day to fade into darkness and then give way to the morning light and a new day where we can begin again. The moon goes through its cycles affecting our tides, our energies, our moods. Seasons change, children grow, and we accumulate experiences that change our view of the world and our place in it. We know this.

But when life is overwhelming and things seem to be falling apart so fast, how do we maintain our balance?

Here’s what the Navajo people of the American Southwest understand:

The Navajo culture revolves around the concept of Hózhó which literally means, “Life in Balance.” The diné, (“the people”), have survived through harsh climate and many imposed hardships throughout the millennia by quietly following the laws of the universe and the teachings of Changing Woman and this earthly plane. These teachings will be valued again as life systems are shaken and new definitions of sustainability are needed.

My book and film projects reflect my personal experiences in more than thirty years of Navajo ceremonies and family gatherings. Sanctioned by my Navajo teacher and blessed in ceremonies and prayers, these teachings are made available to those who don’t have access to this culture. I invite you in, and hope you find Beauty in it.

Hózhó nahasdlii”.  May it be in Beauty.
